Changes coming to Basin Bridge

For the last year or so, people have heard rumors about speed-detection devices being added to the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

Now, that is one step closer.

Beginning March 18, overnight work will begin to install new speed limit signs and radar detection devices, part of a $600 million project.

Expect intermittent alternating lane closures, which can lead to delays. Officials have said the interstate will be open to regular traffic with a 12-foot restriction on oversized loads passing through during work hours.

Once the work is complete, drivers will see signs telling them their speed as they pass and the posted speed limit will be 60 miles per hour for both cars and trucks. Trucks will still be forced to stay in the right lane.
