As we move into and through the Christmas holiday weekend, temperatures will plunge well below freezing. This can make driving very hazardous. Icy conditions pose a serious danger.

I grew up in the snowiest part of the eastern United States. Driving in snow didn’t bother me much. I was terrified of driving on icy roads. Folks in Acadiana don’t have much experience with icy driving conditions.

A small mistake can spell disaster. A thin coat of ice on the road (“black ice”) isn’nt easily detected. It’s crucial to do everything more slowly than normal. Don’t try to make sharp turns. Have a gentle touch on both your brake and accelerator. If you start to skid , steer into it, and keep your foot off the brake. Be especially cautious when approaching a bridge. They ice up before the rest of the road. Make your intentions known.
